iPhone Tracking Discussion Pete Warden and Alasdair Allan talking about how they discovered the existence of the tracking database on the iPhone, and what it might mean. Also how they went about exploring and visualising the data once they knew it was there, and show how it could be used to track individuals movements over time.
P.S. I spent some time thinking about the sub-forum this discussion should be placed into. It's related both to "Computer in your pocket" and "Computer Security". Then I finally decided to post it first to Computer in my pocket, then immediately move to Computer Security but leave the link to the post on the first forum.

BERLIN April 23, 2011 (AP)A German privacy watchdog is demanding answers from Apple Inc. over whether its iPhones and iPads are secretly collecting data on users' locations. Thomas Kranig, head of the data protection authority for the state of Bavaria, where Apple has its German headquarters, said in an interview published in Saturday's Sueddeutsche Zeitung that the company has until May 10 to respond. Apple has come under pressure since researchers raised questions about how tracking data gathered by iPhones and iPads is being handled. Germany has some of the world's strictest privacy laws and has tangled with Google, Facebook and other U.S.-based technology companies over personal data and how it's used. Germany is requesting Apple Inc clear up a number of issues raised in regards to user data stored by its portable devices, such as iPhone and iPad.
On Wednesday, US Senator Al Franken submitted a letter to the company asking for details on the location tracking system that had been discovered by security researchers in his corporate iPhone and 3G-connected iPad tablets. The senator particularly stressed that the unencrypted nature of the data raises even more privacy- and security-related questions.
Following his request, Holger Eichele, a spokesman for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, addressed a similar concern to Apple on Thursday.

I believe it's only a beginning. Other waves with complaints are still ahead. The company knew what it was doing. That's the result. Although this is a podiatry forum thanks for these computer related tips! I read them with pleasure! There is always something to think about.

Apr 25, 2011 Apple sued in Florida over reported iPhone tracking Two Apple customers have sued the company for invasion of privacy and computer fraud over reports that the iPhone and iPad tracks and stores data on a user's location, Bloomberg reports. The complaint was filed Friday in federal court in Tampa by Vikram Ajjampur, an iPhone user in Florida, and William Devito, an iPad owner in New York. Apple Sued Over iPhone Tracking Two men have filed a class-action lawsuit against Apple over the location-based services provided in iOS 4. The practice puts users at a serious risk of privacy invasions and stalking, they argued. "Apple collects the location information covertly, surreptitiously, and in violations of law," according to the lawsuit, which was filed Friday in Florida district court. The issue of iPhone tracking made headlines last week when two researchers published a blog post that said iOS 4+ devices collect a users' location in an unencrypted file known as "consolidated.db." It's no secret that Apple collects this data to serve up location-based services, but the researchers were concerned that this information is stored in an insecure manner, and transferred to a user's PC when they sync their iOS device.
