New Skype for Android

Skype has expanded the possibilities of the Skype for Android. Now, after the release of an updated version of Skype for Android 2.0, users of Android smartphones will be able to make and receive Skype video calls. So far this feature was available only to the users of iPhone/iPad FaceTime application from Apple.

But, unlike the FaceTime application for Apple devices, Skype 2.0 for Android allows you to chat on Skype with friends, not only among users of Android smartphone, but with the owners of any other devices that support video call - iPhone, Mac, PC for the Windows operating system and even some models of modern smart TVs. However, at the time of launching the updated version of Skype, the video calls are supported only by a very limited list of phones - HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo and Google Nexus S. It was promised although to expand this list.

In addition, Skype 2.0 for Android allows video calls not only via Wi-Fi networks but via mobile 3G and 4G-connections (do not forget that the video will need a lot of traffic, and therefore probably preferable to use the Wi-Fi connection). The updated version is available for free download from the Android Market.

We tested the latest Skype in our laboratory. It worked perfectly allowing to talk to another person using his computer located in an opposite part of the world with no problems like it was a local phone call. Although the video call was still unavailable for HTC G2, but the voice call was tested using both WiFi and later G3/G4 connections.

There is also a very nice feature in Skype 2.0 that we didn’t notice before. The new Skype application was able to scan the entire phone book located on the smart phone, checked all the contact emails, and, using this list, found all available Skype accounts and asked which ones should be added to the Skype contacts. Extremely convenient feature! Try it yourself. Just keep in mind that it works relatively slowly for the large phone lists like ours having about 400 contacts with multiple emails and it takes 15-20 or even much more minutes to walk down the list to gather the required information. Also please be careful clicking the 'Return' button on your smart phone. Once you left the list that Skype created for you, you will need to scan the entire phone book again and it is very time consuming. But, in general, it is an extremely convenient feature and we recommend you to do that from time to time to add more friends to your Skype contacts. It sounds like you can use Skype to call to your friends from your mobile phone and never pay for the phone minutes if you have a good data plan.
