Desktop Links and Icons

You spent your time, added many very important links to your computer desktop and then reordered all of them. You are very glad because you know where every important link is.

One day you installed Microsoft Service Pack or Update, maybe you played a video game that changed the screen resolution for a while, maybe you updated a Video Driver and as a result the order that you created on the computer desktop became a complete mess. Don't hurry to restart your computer or start reordering all your icons back. There is a much easier way to go.

1. Start the Task Manager. It can usually be done by simultaneous clicking Ctrl-Shift-Esc.
2. Open the tab called Processes.
3. Find the process called explorer.exe. You should probably reorder all the processes by the alphabet to do it easier way. Just click the Image name (Name, Process Name) column one or two times depending on the original order.
4. Click on explorer.exe one time to select it and then click the End Process button at the bottom right or simply press the Delete key on your keyboard. Don't be afraid that the screen immediately changed. It absolutely normal and we will return it back to the original stage in just a few seconds.
5. Go to the File Menu of the Task Manager and select New Task.
6. Type in the text box the following explorer.exe and then click OK.
7. You got your original desktop with all your links and icons ordered as you wanted before it was messed up.

Remember that if you log off or restart your computer the latest version of the desktop will be saved and there is no way back. The system restore usually brings more issues that help. So if you want to restore the original order do not do that. Just follow the steps described above. It works in Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and some other Windows based operating systems.

Good luck!

Hot Keys

There are many hot keys in Windows that a regular user has no idea about. Some of them can significantly improve both your speed and convenience.

Default Windows hotkeys. If (hopefully) you want to help add to this list:
  1. State clearly what the hotkey does and, of course, what it is, in a readable format.
  2. Mass posting pasted from websites is allowed, but be sure to state whether you've tested them or not. Also, a link to the site would be nice.
  3. Feel free to improve this list as well, by testing untested hotkeys and posting your results.
