Dust Storm in Arizona on July 5, 2011

Sand Storm in Phoenix Arizona July 5 2011

Sandstorm approaches from the south. Watch the wall of dust engulf the Wild Horse Pass Casino and Resort. The end of clip shows daylight to night within seconds. I was going to stop recording when it suddenly became dark!

The first Haboob
(Dust Storm or Sand Storm)
of the Monsoon Season 7/5/2011

This is the first dust storm or haboob of the monsoon season 2011 in Mesa, Arizona (Phoenix Metro). Taken from the roof of our house by my husband. Recorded by Eli the Handyman http://www.elithehandyman.com using his HTC Sensation.

HABOOB SWALLOWS PHOENIX!! July 5, 2011

Photographer Mike Olbinski captured this INCREDIBLE video of the massive haboob that struck Phoenix, Arizona on July 5, 2011. Filmed from a parking garage on 7th Street and McDowell (a vantage point Mike typically uses for sunset photography), Mike was eventually completely engulfed in the massive dust cloud, saying the sky became completely dark--like midnight--in a matter of seconds!

For more on this historic event, check out the NWS Phoenix http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/...011/July/DustStorm.php, and be sure to visit Mike's website, http://www.MikeOlbinski.com

Arizona Dust Storm July 2011, Chandler and Phoenix Arizona Monsoon

Driving in the 5th July 2011 Dust Storm of Arizona. News said it was around 50 miles wide, mile tall and moving around 55mph west/northwest. Turned day into night quick.

Phoenix Dust Storm 2011
Arizona Dust Storm Monsoon July 2011 in Gilbert, Arizona
Haboob Cloud

Massive dust storm hits the Phoenix Arizona and Gilbert Arizona areas on July 5th, 2011. HD video footage of the Phoenix, Arizona 2011 Dust Storm Haboob. I scrambled outside very quickly, completely caught off guard by this dust storm so please do not expect any good commentary as it was shot on the fly. lol But I do hope you like the footage! There was tons of dust being thrown through the air, so breathing was quite difficult and the winds began to pick up as the dust storm progressed.

Time Lapse - Arizona Dust Storm - July 5th 2011 - As it hits

This is a 6 minute video time lapsed to less than 2 minutes of the big wall of dust, over a mile high, that hit the Phoenix area on July 5th, 2011.

Arizona Car Wreck following Desert Haboob or Sandstorm, Burning Cars and Truck

Comments from youtube author: "I was in Arizona filming the desert thunderstorms that occur during the annual monsoon season. We had been filming a very strong thunderstorm with lots of dramatic lightning. When the rain from these storms falls to the ground it creates a large pool of cold air that rushes down to the ground. As the cold air hits the ground it spreads outwards across the desert floor kicking up a wall of dirt and dust. This is called a Haboob, you can see the dust storm racing across the desert at the beginning of the clip. As we tried to re-position ourseleves to get more shots of the Haboob we came to a sudden stop on the interstate, moments later a large cloud of black smoke rose up just a few car lengths ahead of us. There had been a serious car wreck, A truck driving too fast in the reduced visibility had rear ended some slow moving cars and the resulting inferno is what you see in the video."

Phoenix Dust Storm 2007

Every year about this time it becomes a lousy time to play golf in the Phoenix-Mesa region because of this.

Reportedly visibility was reduced to 30 feet.

This video is raw feed from a TV news chopper covering the story. Sadly one of the two aircraft was involved in a fatal mid-air sometime after this day.

P.S. Although all that is off-topic for this forum I assumed that it would be interesting to watch these videos. The storm like this is extremely rare and that's the very first one that I've seen for over 10 years living in AZ. The Dust Storm flew right over our houses and our heads. The total event took about two hours, but the main most significant dust wave took only 15-20 minutes.
